Borg Warner consistently supports charities across the globe and for the second time they came up with an initiative that rewarded people for keeping fit by challenging employees to accumulate miles equating to 5 times around the globe. All Borg Warner plants across the globe were invited to log how far they had walked, and teams from each plant logging the most miles were given $2000 to donate to a charity of the winning team’s choice. The Bradford Team consisting of Anita Beaumont, Bev Pybone, Michelle Clegg, Christine Cliffe, Clive Titterton, Noel Bennett, Graham D’Arcy and Paul Dunion clocked a total of 9299 miles and have selected The Samantha Sykes Foundation as the recipient. Along with the $2,000, the Bradford plant had a cook off and employees were invited to cook a dish of their choice for judging by employees, who paid £2 each to taste. Again the winner could select a charity of their choice to receive the money raised. The winning dish was a healthy Lamb Paya Indian Curry cooked by Eric Sykes. In total Borg Warner donated £1913.70.
The Samantha Sykes Foundation has already identified a recipient for the very generous donation. A young lady who has no family support and cared for, in what is known as Supported Living, has applied for funding to go to University. Before she can accepted in to University she needs to complete an access course, but the cost of the course and a laptop is £2,047. With no family support and the Local Authority declining her request for funding it seemed beyond her reach. The actual figures show that only 7% of people in care of The Local Authority or in Supported Living go on to further and higher education. The donation from Borg Warner will go directly to pay for the Access Course and laptop. As the charity has no paid members, 100% of funds raised goes to young people, something the charity is extremely proud of.
On behalf of The Samantha Sykes Foundation, and also this young lady, I would like to thank Borg Warner and everyone who participated, not only in Bradford but across the globe, once again we are pleased to announce “ your money well spent”
